Boston to Miami: $950 – $1200

Open Transport | 1,500 Miles | 5-6 Days Transit

That is the working figure for a standard vehicle on open transport, with enclosed at $1,425-$1,800. Fifteen hundred miles — the full length of the eastern seaboard, and one of the flattest, most straightforward roads in the country.

The road is not what makes this route difficult. Boston and Miami are two of the least truck-friendly cities on the coast, and almost everything that goes wrong on this booking happens in the first hundred yards or the last.

Price Ranges by Vehicle Type

Boston to Miami runs $950-$1,200 open and $1,425-$1,800 enclosed across roughly 1,500 miles — the full length of the eastern seaboard.

Vehicle Category Examples Open Transport Enclosed Transport
Compact/Sedan Civic, Corolla, Model 3, Camry $950-$1000 $1425-$1500
Mid-size Sedan Accord, Malibu, Model S $975-$1025 $1475-$1550
Compact SUV/Crossover RAV4, CR-V, Tucson, CX-5 $1000-$1050 $1500-$1575
Mid-size SUV Grand Cherokee, Explorer, X5 $1025-$1100 $1525-$1625
Full-size SUV Tahoe, Suburban, Escalade $1050-$1200 $1550-$1750
Pickup Truck (standard) F-150, Silverado, RAM 1500 $1050-$1200 $1550-$1775
Pickup (heavy/dually) F-350, RAM 3500, lifted trucks $1200-$1350 $1800-$2000
Luxury/Exotic Porsche, Ferrari, Bentley, AMG $1075-$1275 $1575-$1800
Classic/Antique Pre-1980 vehicles, show cars Not recommended $1525-$1900
Motorcycle $427-$617 $712-$997

The increments follow height rather than weight. Nine positions are sold on a trailer and a tall vehicle encroaches on the one stacked above it, which is why a crossover costs more than a saloon of similar mass and why a raised-roof van costs more again.

One thing worth knowing before you read the rest of this page: the price is the easy part of this route. What actually determines whether the booking goes smoothly is where a seventy-five-foot truck can physically stop at each end, and neither Boston nor Miami is generous about that.

City-to-City Price Matrix

The numbers below are for the metropolitan areas rather than for specific streets, and on this route that distinction matters more than usual.

From / To Miami Fort Lauderdale Miami Beach Boca Raton
Boston $950-$1050 $970-$1085 $990-$1120 $1010-$1155
Cambridge $980-$1080 $1000-$1115 $1020-$1150 $1040-$1185
Worcester $1010-$1110 $1030-$1145 $1050-$1180 $1070-$1215
Newton $1040-$1140 $1060-$1175 $1080-$1210 $1100-$1245

Boston prices lowest of the origin cities because it is where southbound trailers begin loading — the I-95 snowbird flow starts here, so your car is the anchor that justifies sending a truck north rather than the last space on a full one.

At the far end, Miami is the baseline and the surrounding cities add $20 to $100. Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are frequently easier deliveries than Miami itself despite costing slightly more, and that is worth knowing if you have any flexibility about where the car ends up.

What the Matrix Cannot Show

Whether the truck can reach you. Boston’s older streets were laid out before anything resembling a modern lorry and a good many of them have no legal place to stop or turn. Miami adds its own problems: the barrier islands are reached by causeways with restrictions, much of the older grid is narrow, and condo towers and gated communities frequently prohibit a commercial vehicle on site altogether.

None of that appears in a price. All of it appears in your afternoon if it is not settled at booking.

What Makes This Route Cost What It Does

Fifteen hundred miles of flat, low, open interstate, and almost none of the difficulty is on it.

The Distance and the Empty Return

A carrier prices a round trip rather than a journey. Southbound in autumn the trailer leaves Boston full and comes back with very little aboard, and those fifteen hundred empty miles are recovered from the loaded leg. That is the single largest component of the seasonal variation on this page.

Two Difficult Cities

This is the part that distinguishes the route. Most corridors have one awkward end and one straightforward one — a tight metropolitan collection and a wide suburban delivery, or the reverse. Boston to Miami has two.

A driver working this lane expects to negotiate a meeting point at both ends, and builds that expectation into what they will accept for the load. It does not show up as a line item. It shows up as a rate slightly above what fifteen hundred flat miles would otherwise command.

What Does Not Affect It

The weather, essentially. I-95 south of New England is clear year-round and there is no elevation anywhere on the route. A January departure spends its first few hours on treated road and is out of the salt by Maryland.

Hurricane season touches the last two hundred miles between June and November, which can move a delivery date but rarely a price.

Monthly Price Calendar

This is a snowbird corridor at its full length, so the calendar moves the price further here than on almost any route we publish.

Month Open Transport Availability Notes
January $950-$1200 Good Standard rates, post-holiday
February $950-$1200 Good Steady demand
March $874-$1140 Excellent BEST month to ship (save $76-$60)
April $874-$1140 Excellent Second best month (save $76-$60)
May $950-$1200 Good Transitional
June $1064-$1380 Tight Summer rush begins (+$114-$180)
July $1092-$1440 Very tight Peak — most expensive (+$142-$240)
August $1064-$1416 Tight Still peak + college (+$114-$216)
September $950-$1200 Good Normalizing
October $950-$1260 Good Steady
November $1045-$1380 Tightening Holiday shipping (+$95-$180)
December $1092-$1500 Limited WORST month — avoid if possible (+$142-$300)

October and November southbound are the peak, and the mechanism is the empty return described above. March and April are cheapest going south, because by then the flow has reversed and it is the southbound trailer that needs filling.

The Move Worth Making

Late September rather than late October. Six weeks earlier, before the migration builds, and worth $150-$250 on an identical booking. Nothing else on this page comes close to that as a saving.

Availability, Which Is Different

Unusually for a peak-season booking, getting a truck out of Boston in October is not especially hard. The lane starts here, so the trailer arriving for you is empty. Customers in Virginia and the Carolinas spend that month watching full trucks drive past; you will not.

You are paying the season. You are not usually also queuing for it.

Open vs. Enclosed: The Price Difference

Open transport is $950-$1,200 here and enclosed $1,425-$1,800 — roughly $0.63-$0.80 a mile against $0.95-$1.20. Assignment on an open trailer typically takes one to five days; on an enclosed one, three to ten, because there are far fewer of them working.

The open deck is how manufacturers deliver new stock to dealers. Damage occurs on well under one shipment in a hundred and almost all of it during loading rather than on the road.

The Access Problem Applies Here Too

An enclosed trailer is longer and less manoeuvrable than an open one, and you are collecting in Boston and delivering in Miami. The list of places an enclosed rig can work at either end is shorter still.

If the car warrants a box, settle both meeting points in the same conversation rather than discovering the problem after the trailer has left Massachusetts.

When It Is Genuinely Right

  • A nose low enough that an open ramp becomes a hazard to the front of the car
  • A value the open carrier’s per-unit cover could not actually replace
  • Original paint that a respray would diminish rather than restore
  • An insurer that has written covered transport into its terms

There is no weather case on this corridor between April and November. Full comparison: open versus enclosed auto transport.

Shipping vs. Driving: Dollar-for-Dollar

Driving comes to roughly $890 for the 1,500 miles: about $240 of fuel at 25 miles to the gallon, two nights at $120, $90 of meals, and $315 of wear at the conventional 21 cents a mile. Shipping is $950-$1,200 plus a one-way fare of around $180, so $1,130 to $1,380 in total.

The other column is time: two long days of your own against none.

Why the Gap Is Narrower Than It Looks

Boston to Miami is one of the cheapest and most frequent domestic air routes in the country, which pulls the flight cost down and makes shipping more competitive here than on a comparable run into somewhere less well served.

Against that, the drive is genuinely long. Twenty-three hours means two hard days or three comfortable ones, and most of it is I-95 through the north-eastern corridor, which is not driving anybody enjoys.

The Honest Position

Driving is cheaper by a few hundred dollars. Whether that is worth two days on the eastern seaboard is a question only you can answer, and for the snowbird traffic this route mostly carries, the answer is usually no — which is a legitimate reason to ship rather than a reason to pretend the arithmetic says something it does not.

How to Pay Less on This Route

Go in late September instead of late October

Worth $150-$250 on an identical booking, and comfortably the largest saving available on this page. The migration happens on the same schedule every year and surprises nobody in the trade.

Settle both meeting points at booking

This does not reduce the quote, but it prevents the two most expensive things that go wrong here. A driver who knows in advance that they are loading at a retail car park in Dedham and unloading at one in Hallandale will build the run around it. A driver who finds out on the morning will spend it on the phone.

Take the driver’s suggestion

If they propose somewhere other than your street at either end, agree to it. They are not being difficult; they are looking at a seventy-five-foot vehicle and a road that was laid out in 1840 or a causeway with a weight restriction.

Offer a wide collection window

A three to five-day span lets a dispatcher fit you into a run rather than build one around you, and it is free. In October it also improves your position considerably.

Consider Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach

They cost slightly more on paper and are frequently easier deliveries than Miami itself. If somebody at the far end can collect the car from thirty miles up the coast, the whole exercise gets simpler.

Ship northbound in the autumn if you can

A car going Miami to Boston in October is the load carriers cannot find, and it prices below the southbound rate for the same distance. If your timing runs against the crowd, that is the best position on this corridor.

Book ten days out rather than three

Worth $100-$150 outside the peak and considerably more inside it.

Do not buy enclosed transport for the weather

There is no weather on this route between April and November, and the salt exposure in January lasts a few hours. Choose enclosed for the vehicle, and if you do, expect the access question to get harder rather than easier.

Red Flags: Quotes Too Good to Be True

What you are given is an offer being made to drivers on your behalf. Until one accepts it, it commits nobody — which is why an unusually low figure is not a bargain that others overlooked.

Anything much below $950

Carrier margins sit at five to ten per cent. Priced under what drivers will take for fifteen hundred miles with a difficult city at each end, the load goes unclaimed while trailers fill elsewhere. The call explaining that the number has to rise tends to arrive once starting again is no longer practical.

A promise of door-to-door without a single question

On this corridor that is a claim nobody can honour blind. An operator who takes a Beacon Hill address and a Miami Beach address without asking anything about access has not thought about the job, and the conversation you are avoiding now will happen on the day instead.

A guaranteed delivery date

Nobody in this industry can guarantee one, and in hurricane season the last two hundred miles make that more true rather than less. Windows, not dates.

A substantial deposit before a carrier is assigned

Reputable brokers take little or nothing until a driver has committed. Being asked for a large sum before anybody has agreed to move your car is the wrong way round.

Numbers you cannot verify

Every interstate broker and carrier holds MC and USDOT numbers, searchable in the FMCSA’s public database along with insurance status and safety record. Two minutes, and hardly anybody spends them.

Payment Methods and Deposit Info

Expect to pay between nothing and $200 at booking by card, which holds your place — many brokers charge nothing until a carrier has actually accepted the load. The balance, $750 to $1,200 depending on the vehicle, goes to the driver on delivery in cash, a cashier’s cheque or a money order. Prepaying the whole amount by card through the broker is normally possible and sometimes carries a small discount.

Why the Balance Goes to the Driver

Because the driver is the party who has done the work, and because it puts your money and the delivery inspection in the same place at the same moment. That is useful to you and it is worth using properly.

Inspect First, Then Pay

Walk the car in daylight against your Boston photographs, look along the sills and behind the bumpers, and get anything you find written onto the Bill of Lading before you hand anything over. A signature with no exceptions closes the claim permanently.

A Florida-Specific Note

If the handover has moved to a car park because the delivery address was unreachable, do the inspection there rather than driving home and looking later. Once the driver has gone, nobody can establish where a mark came from — and on this route a relocated handover is the norm rather than the exception.

Bring the balance in the form agreed at booking. A driver at the end of a 1,500-mile run is often unable to take a personal cheque.

Pricing FAQ

What does it cost to ship a car from Boston to Miami?

$950-$1,200 on an open trailer and $1,425-$1,800 enclosed, over roughly 1,500 miles — about $0.63-$0.80 a mile.

Will the truck come to my address?

Often not, at either end, and this is the defining practical fact about the route. Boston’s older streets predate anything like a modern lorry; in Miami the barrier islands are reached by restricted causeways and condo towers and gated communities frequently prohibit commercial vehicles on site. Agree a meeting point when you book.

Does that cost extra?

No, if it is settled in advance. It costs an afternoon and occasionally a redelivery if it is discovered on the day.

How long does it take?

Five to six days on the road plus one to three to get a carrier assigned. Six to nine days from booking to delivery, wider in the autumn peak.

Why is October so much more expensive?

The snowbird migration. Trailers run south full and return with almost nothing aboard, and those fifteen hundred empty miles are recovered from the loaded journey. Expect $150-$250 more.

Is it hard to get a truck in October?

Less so than anywhere further south on the same road. The I-95 flow starts in Boston, so the trailer arriving for you is empty and your booking is what justifies sending it north. You pay the peak; you do not usually also queue.

When is the cheapest time to ship?

March and April southbound. Moving an October departure back to late September saves $150-$250 and is the single best decision available here.

Is northbound cheaper?

In autumn, distinctly — a truck heading north in October would otherwise run empty, so the rate falls below the southbound figure for the same distance. In spring it reverses.

Does hurricane season affect it?

The last two hundred miles, between June and November. A driver may hold rather than run into a system, which can move a delivery date. It rarely moves the price. Build three days of slack into a September booking.

Should I deliver to Miami or somewhere nearby?

If you have the choice, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are frequently easier deliveries despite costing $20-$100 more on paper. Somebody collecting the car thirty miles up the coast simplifies the whole exercise.

Are there hidden fees?

With a reputable broker, no. What legitimately changes a quote is disclosed beforehand: a taller vehicle than declared, a car that will not start and needs winching, or an address a full-size trailer cannot reach — and that last one is precisely why this page keeps returning to the access question.

When do I pay?

Little or nothing at booking, the balance to the driver at delivery in the form agreed. Do the inspection before you hand it over.

Should I just drive it?

About $890 all in against $1,130-$1,380 to ship and fly, so driving is cheaper by a few hundred. It also means twenty-three hours on I-95 through the north-eastern corridor. For most of the traffic this route carries, that is a trade people decline — which is a reason rather than an excuse.
